Spacer Instructions

Normally we bond (cement) small brackets on the front surfaces of all teeth except the molars.  For support we usually place metal bands that go around a tooth on the first molars.  The separators are used to create small spaces on either side of the teeth that will have bands inserted on them.  They make placing the bands much easier and less painful.

They are either small doughnut-shaped blue elastic modules or small springs.

The will feel like a piece of apply or meat stuck between your teeth.

There will usually be some sensitivity for a few days.  If they do cause discomfort, try rinsing your mouth with warm salt water.  You may also take an Advil, Tylenol or Aspirin.  The discomfort usually goes away in a day or two.

*  Brush normally.  Continue flossing, but NOT where we have placed the spacers.

Avoid very sticky food (toffee, caramel, etc.) and chewing gum.

*  If one or more comes out, and it will be another 3 or more days before your next appointment, call us during office hours.  Usually it means that more than enough space has been created and it is not a serious problem, but we may want you to come in to have them replaced.
